Let's go fishing

The water is finally up to seasonal temperatures, and we have some great fishing weather ahead. Let's go catch some fish.

Maybe its not catch and release but that they're getting smarter.......

Nine-spined stickleback share the human ability to copy each other's behaviour if it's to their advantage.

They're small in size but big in mind: sticklebacks display a remarkably human-like intelligence when it comes to searching for food, according to scientists in the UK. By comparing their own experiences with the behaviour of their fellow fish, the sticklebacks are able to improve their success rate.

The discovery of this sophisticated type of social learning in sticklebacks, known as a "hill-climbing" strategy, suggests that such cognitive tricks might be more common among non-human animals than previously thought.

The study also shows that big brains like humans' might not be the only way to produce a cumulative culture within a species.

"Small fish may have small brains but they still have some surprising cognitive abilities," said Jeremy Kendal from Durham University's anthropology department. "Hill-climbing strategies are widely seen in human society whereby advances in technology are down to people choosing the best technique through social learning and improving on it, resulting in cumulative culture. But our results suggest brain size isn't everything when it comes to the capacity for social learning."

Kevin Laland of St Andrews University, who also took part in the study, said: "Nine-spined sticklebacks may be the geniuses of the fish world. It's remarkable that a form of learning found to be optimal in humans is exactly what these fish do."

In the experiment, reported in tomorrow's issue of the journal Behavioral Ecology, scientists caught 270 nine-spined sticklebacks from the Melton Brook in Leicestershire. The fish were placed in a tank with two feeders, one of which supplied a lot more food than the other, known as the "rich feeder".

The fish that learned to prefer the rich feeder were then allowed to watch their fellow fish feeding in a separate test but, this time, the two feeders had been swapped. After watching for a while, the observers were allowed to choose a feeder for themselves and around 75% were able to work out from their observations that the feeders had been switched.

Lots of animals learn from their more experienced peers to gain skills such as hunting, foraging or evading predators.

"But it is not always a recipe for success to simply copy someone," said Kendal. "Animals are often better off being selective about when and who they copy. These fish are obviously not at all closely related to humans, yet they have this human ability to only copy when the pay-off is better than their own. You might expect this ability in animals who are closely related to humans. In the case of the nine-spined stickleback, they have most likely adapted to their local ecology."

Sounds Like a Good Problem

Largemouth bass overpopulating many lakes

By Associated Press, Posted: Jun. 13, 2009

Spooner - Wisconsin wildlife officials say bass catch-and-release might be working too well.

The Department of Natural Resources says a mail survey of bass anglers found they kept only 550,000, or 6%, of the 10 million bass they caught in 2006. In contrast, state anglers kept about 2.2 million of 7 million walleye caught, or about 30%.

DNR fisheries biologist Larry Damman in Spooner says high minimum size limits coupled with catch-and-release has resulted in many lakes with overabundant, stunted bass populations in which few largemouths ever reach legal size.

Fisheries managers want anglers to harvest more bass in northern Wisconsin, especially in Polk and Washburn counties, to keep population numbers in balance and improve growth rates.

Hot Bites Right Now

I like to pass on good info when I have it, and I have a couple pieces of it right now.

1.) Trolling bite: Koshkonong. Pulling cranks and stickbaits is producing a mixed bag of walleyes, whitebass and pike.

2.) Fowler Lake: The stocked trout are biting very good. They are suspended in the deep basin, but you can find them with your electronics.

3.)Lake Kessus: Crappies are biting, big time. I don't think this will hold up as this news came to me late, but you might want to give it a go.

Spotted Musky Improvement Plan

From the DNR

MADISON – The 1,100 fingerlings that made the road trip from Ontario, Canada, to their new homes in three northeastern Wisconsin lakes are among new efforts this spring in the decades-long quest to restore a self-sustaining population of the Great Lakes strain spotted musky to Green Bay.

These young fish will eventually serve as broodstock for Green Bay.

Taken as eggs from Georgian Bay and later certified disease free, they were raised in the small, Sir Sanford Fleming College hatchery in Ontario, Canada and stocked into Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan County, and Anderson and Archibald lakes in Oconto County.

The $59,000 project, funded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, money from the Fox River environmental restoration settlement, Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin, Muskies Canada and Titletown Chapter of Muskies Inc., is aimed at increasing the genetic diversity in Green Bay’s spotted musky population, which in turn will yield healthier fish, according to fisheries biologist David Rowe.

“Greater genetic diversity helps to protect a population from changes in their environment,” Rowe says. “If all the fish have the same genotype, they are all likely to succumb to the same illness or an environmental change like a warmer climate. If there is a great amount of diversity, the changes that impact some fish will not affect all fish in the population. This means the population can better adapt to changing conditions, and then they pass those stronger traits on to their offspring.”

The three receiving the Canadian fish have a 50-inch size limit to protect them, giving DNR multiple years to collect eggs before the musky would be vulnerable to harvest, according to Rowe.

A $200,000 grant from the Natural Resources Damage Assessment that resulted from the Fox River environmental settlement will allow the DNR to stock the Ontario-raised strain of musky into the recently established brood lakes for the next four years, which will continue to increase the genetic variation and abundance of the re-established Green Bay population.

Spotted musky are native to Green Bay, but the population collapsed in the early 1900s due to over-fishing, pollution and habitat destruction. Thanks to stocking efforts that began in 1989, the population in the bay is older and larger than ever, according to Rowe.

“The musky have grown fast in Green Bay’s waters,” Rowe says. “We estimate the population in the lower bay somewhere between 5,000 to 10,000 musky and just this spring we handled about a dozen fish larger than 50 inches in our nets.”

Even though the musky population has been revived and anglers are finding opportunities for trophy fish, biologists, who have been looking for signs of natural reproduction for 20 years, are just now starting to see hopeful results.

“Last fall, for the first time, we collected two, unmarked fingerling musky in the lower Menomonie River,” Rowe says. “We know from genetic analysis that these two had the same genetic markers as the adult fish from Green Bay, meaning they are Great Lakes Spotted muskies, and the first evidence of natural reproduction.”

To help determine why the DNR hasn’t seen more spotted musky reproduction, fisheries crews have begun a two-year study funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act Program and several musky angling clubs including; Dave’s Musky Club, C&R Musky Club, Winnebagoland Musky Club, M&M Musky Club, Titletown Chapter of Muskies Inc., and the Between the Lakes Chapter of Muskies Inc.

This spring 20 female musky were inserted with miniature radio transmitters when they were captured during DNR fyke-netting. When those females spawn and expel their eggs, the transmitter will also drop, pinpointing their spawning location. This information will allow biologists to identify the area and see if there are any problems that might be hindering natural reproduction such as habitat degradation, poor water quality, or invasive species.

Tuesday Night Big Bass League

Tonight's prediction: I'll take the over. No question about it.

There's going to be a ton of fish brought in tonight, but somebody is going connect with a large fish on or near a spawning area. Tonight could be the night somebody breaks the 6lb barrier this season.

I was almost dead on last week, but I'll venture the winning fish will be between 4.5-5lbs and anything below 4lbs won't be anything but a point fish this week.

Good Luck,

Ray and I got off to a rocky start, but I put us on a working pattern by 7:15 and he ended up catching the winner a 4.58lb largemouth.

I didn't bring in a legal fish, but had one of my best nights of musky fishing ever. I caught one, had two more hooked up and had a follow from a high 30's fish. Everything was chasing a black and blue jig and chunk.

Birthday Trip

Thursday is my 35th birthday, and I'm going fishing. A report will follow!

New law restores longtime bass and musky season structures

MADISON - Wisconsin’s longstanding season structures for bass and musky have been officially restored and the early-season barbless hook requirements eliminated for some catch-and-release seasons under a bill Gov. Jim Doyle signed into law earlier this month.

As a result of the changes made by 2009 Wis. Act 6 (Assembly Bill 4):

* The normal musky season opening dates will remain in effect. This means the northern zone musky season opens May 23 this year and no person may actively fish for musky before that date in waters north of Highway 10. Southern zone musky season opens May 2.
* The largemouth/ smallmouth bass season opens May 2 on most state waters. In the northern zone, anglers may fish for bass but as in the past, must release all bass they catch until June 20. Anglers are NOT restricted to barbless hooks and artificial lures during this catch and release portion of the season in the northern zone or on other waters which have a catch and release bass season.

This bill was initiated and adopted in response to a statutory change – not a Department of Natural Resources rule change -- in the 2007 budget bill that would have required the DNR to create an early musky catch-and-release season and required anglers to use barbless hooks during that season and any bass catch-and-release season.

“Both of these statutory requirements caused considerable consternation among the angling public, and we are grateful that those laws have been repealed before the May 2 fishing opener,” says Joe Hennessy, the DNR fish biologist who coordinates fisheries regulations

Rock River

I hooked up with Paul Smith from the Journal-Sentinel today. We headed down to the Rock River.

Launched at Kmart around 11am, and we fished a few spots downstream from the 106 bridge. Connected with around a half dozen walleyes and saugers and a buffalo. Saw a couple other walleyes get caught on green plastic/jig combos in the same area we were fishing.

Slack water, 3 way rigs with a very short dropper line and a short leader was the key. Bigger fatheads and large rosies were working better than small ones. Bite was very light on all but one fish.

Flow is fast and heavy, the water is very high. If you're going to drift, you'll need some heavy jigs and a solid trolling motor to control. Water at the Kmart launch is at the top of the ramp, and the concrete "bumpers" are underneath the water. The pier was not in.

Water temps between 34-38. Wind was brutual at times.

The article should be in the Sunday Edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Spearers take 1,512 sturgeon in Fox Valley lakes

From JsOnline

By Don Behm of the Journal Sentinel

Feb. 21, 2009 6:02 p.m. | The 2009 sturgeon spearing season closed today after spearers took a total of 1,512 of the fish from lakes Winnebago, Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts.

The count included 301 juveniles, 596 males and 615 adult females, which was 97.6% of the 630 quota for adult females allowed this season, said Ron Bruch, sturgeon biologist with the state Department of Natural Resources. The season opened Feb. 14.

Spearers took 89 sturgeon on Lake Winnebago today before the season closed at 12:30 p.m., Bruch said. The lake's season total of 1,237 sturgeon fell below the record of 1,854 set in 2004.

"A snowstorm and strong winds created white-out conditions on Lake Winnebago today," he said. "But that didn't stop large numbers of dedicated sturgeon spearers from driving out on the ice to their shacks this morning."

The season on lakes Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts ended Wednesday. Spearers took 275 sturgeon from those lakes this season.

News

Some Items of Interest:

1.) The Milwaukee Journal had an article today that discussed controlling the water flows through the dams on the Oconomowoc River Chain. After last year's massive flooding, the issue again has returned. Personally, I'm not sure how they hope to fix the problem with the dams built the way they are. The Okauchee/Oconomowoc dam and the Fowler/Lac Labelle dam are designed to only hold back so much water. The Okauchee dam can be opened to increase flow when neccessary, but that wouldn't have changed the downriver effects much with all the water last year.

Either way, here's a cut and paste link to the article:
http://www.jsonline.com/news/waukesha/39646342.html

2.)I'm doing some garage cleaning and I have several bass and musky combos I'd like to sell. They're all st croix rods with abu garcia or shimano reels. A couple have never been used. If you want more information, please email me and I'll send you a complete list.

3.)Looks like this weather is going to slow down the transition to open water. Two things. First be carfeul when on the ice after the fresh snow as it may cover up some old holes or stress cracks. Second, since we'll be ice fishing a few more weeks, now would be a great time to stock up on ice fishing gear at the shop.

4.)The open water fishing that's available right now appears to be surprisingly consistent. The open water areas on the wisconsin river below the dams in the dells and at petenwell are producing fish for guys willing to put in the time. Large ice flows are still reported, and I'll make sure to keep you updated on conditions as information comes to me.

5.) For those of you who asked, Kelly will be having the baby next week. Its our second, and I can't wait to meet my daughter Quinn. Big brother Shannon, my son, also seems excited.

Good Luck and stay safe,

Open water!

It has begun....

Early reports from the dells have fish biting in the open water stretches. Lots of ice flows are reported, but guys are out.

I have no solid data on open water access on the Rock River, but the warm temps and rain have busted up some of the areas below the dams. A few anglers are reporting some success fishing from shore.

The Milwaukee harbor area is also open. I'll be checking with some sources, but I saw boats out there this morning when I was down on the southside of Milwaukee.

I'll be prepping the boat this weekend. If you have to stratch the open water itch, we can get out on weather permitting days starting next week. Give me a call.

I get emails

...and they help me pass the winter months. National Geographic is promoting a program called Hooked on Bass.

HOOKED ON BASS
The largemouth bass is more than just Americas most sought after freshwater fish. It fuels an entire culture of followers that pursue the bass at all levels for different reasons: weekend hobbyists, professional tournament anglers, and obsessed record hunters. Some fish to spend time with family and for relaxation, some for the challenge and the connection with nature, and others for the money and obsession. The pursuit of the bass has a $60 billion dollar effect on our economy by the 30 million bass anglers, a sport which has become the most popular outdoor activity in America. Three stories typify the culture of bassfishing, and happen on three different lakes across the country. In Texas, on Lake Sam Rayburn, weekend angler Rusty Clark fishes in one of the worlds largest amateur bassfishing tournaments. In New York, on Lake Oneida, Kevin Van Dam tries to secure his year-long quest to be the top professional in the sport. And in California, on Dixon Lake, three world record hunters obsessively hunt one fish that they believe to be the biggest bass of all time.

Reflections on 2008 Season

I had a quiet New Year's Eve, and I was up early this morning. There was a bunch of fishing shows doing their end of year retrospective episodes, and it got me to thinking about my 2008. Fishing wise, I think it was a pretty good year.

I'd be lying if I didn't say that catching a 10+ pound largemouth wasn't a highlight of the year, but I'd also be lying if I din't say that my entire Texas fishing trip at the end of February wasn't fantastic.

Taking Paul Smith, the new Journal-Sentinel outdoor writer out for an article was great, as was the plug that the shop and I received in the Milwaukee Magazine article.

The local open water season started good despite the very high water, and my first trip out after the opener brought in a trophy smallmouth for my clients. I also spent alot of time guiding on Silver Lake this year which resulted in lots of days with a solid number of fish caught. I had three days where my clients caught more than 100 fish there.

The flooding kept me off my usual Lac Labelle trips during late May and early June. It also cut down on the time I spent during the early season on the Rock River. My best walleye fishing ended up being in the late part of summer on Lake Koshkonong when the bite got hot. I had some really fantastic days pulling spinner harnesses over the rocks and sand.

All of these things were great, and I'm grateful that people give me a chance to share my knowledge with them, but the highlight of the year has to be the times I spent with my son, Shannon, in the boat and fishing off the pier when we took a short family vacation up to Eagle River. He wasn't even two years old for the trip, but he took to fishing the way I had always dreamed that he would.

Sitting on the pier, catching potato chip sized bluegills with my son, was for me, better than everything else that happened on or off the water this past year.

See you on the water in 2009!

Silver Carp in Wisconsin

From JSOnline.com:

Jumping silver carp discovered in Wisconsin waters
By Dan Egan of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: Dec. 2, 2008

The notorious jumping silver carp has made its way into Wisconsin.

The super-sized cousin to the common carp was discovered late last week in Wisconsin waters of the Mississippi River. It is the first time silver carp, one of four species of Asian carp, have been confirmed in the state, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

The imported fish have been steadily making their way north in the Mississippi River basin since they escaped containment in Arkansas more than three decades ago. Biologists figured it was only a matter of time until the filter-feeding fish that can grow to 60 pounds made it this far north.

Silver carp are trouble for recreational boaters because of their penchant for leaping out of the water. Also, they feast on the bottom of the food chain, and that can have a big impact on native fish that directly or indirectly rely on the same food.

"A common question is to ask what will be the impact of the Asian carp to the river that we love," DNR's Ron Benjamin said in a news release. "The short answer today is it clearly isn't good."

This is the first time they have been found north of Clinton, Iowa - a huge jump in their range. It also means the Wisconsin River could be exposed to the fish, and that could open the door to infestations in inland lakes across the state.

The bigger worry is that the fish will make the jump into the Great Lakes via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, though that has yet to happen. An electric fish barrier is all that stands between the Asian carp and Lake Michigan. A new, more robust barrier has been built, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has yet to permanently turn it on out of safety concerns for boaters.

The Mississippi silver carp was caught in a commercial fishing net near La Crosse. The catch included two bighead carp.

State biologists don't know how many of the fish are in the river and whether they will be able to thrive this far north, but fish experts have said Asian carp should do just fine in Wisconsin waters.

I highly recommend them.

Great weekend on the water...

It was a great weekend on the water with new clients Paul and Gretchen.

Saturday: Took a shot at musky on Okauchee. We went 0-3, but had some action. Lost one after a solid hook-up on a bulldog, and had two more roll on our sucker. Had two other lazy follows. Came in empty handed other than a pike, but an otherwise solid outing.

Sunday: Hit the rock river to try for some walleyes. Got into a batch right away below the Jefferson Dam and had steady action for a couple of hours. Nothing big, but we caught more than 20.

Walleye fishing will stay good for a little bit and the musky fishing will really pick up after this warmer weather moves through.

Out and about

Hey gang,

I haven't been out to much the last couple weeks, but I snuck in a few hours Friday afternoon. Even when I'm not on the water I keep the fishing reports at the baitshop blog up to date with information from other sources, including some other guides. I update it at least twice a week, so if things are slow here, link over and you'll get the skinny on conditions.

The walleye bite on the Rock River is set to get good. There are some nicer fish mixed in with the fish in the deeper holes. I fished five spots from the Jefferson rapids to Fort Atkinson, pulled out, then drfted a few runs at Blackhawk. Ended up with six walleyes and a handful of white bass. Jig and minnow was the best option.

I'll be out this week chasing musky and I'll post when we get back.

Stay tuned.

Current Conditions

Got out yesterday afternoon for a couple hours. I expected the water to be much cooler, but it is still in the mid to upper 60's.

Silver Lake was the usual run. Got some fast action on the west end and around the sunken island. We fished a couple hours then pulled the boat and headed over to Moose Lake to give it a go.

Moose was slow, but steady. Got a couple of bass out of ths shallows pitching a jig and chunk or wacky worming. Moved out onto the weedflats and switched to lipless crankbaits and had some fast action to wrap up the evening. We lost one very nice pike right by the boat.

The shallow weedflat pattern will be solid as long as this weather holds. The next big cold snap should trigger fish to move into their fall patterns quickly.

I have some limited availablity for the next couple weeks. Give me a call if you want to get out.

Cheers

The lake looks to be a great northern and musky fishery. It certainly looks to be the kind of lake where one should be able to catch some walleyes, which is what I really wanted to do.

I only caught one walleye, and the pike and musky fishing was pretty slow. Caught a few shorter fish By late in the afternoon on wednesday I got frustrated, and switched to bass fishing, and then the fishing got interesting. Caught several fish up to 22 inches using rattle traps, rattling rapalas, and a jig/chunk combo.

The highlight of the trip for me was seeing my two year old son Shannon take to fishing. He hasn't really fished yet, but I gave him a short ultralight pole to play with while we were at the cabin. By the end of the first day, he was pointing to the pier and babbling "rod?!?"

As a result, I spent a good deal of time sitting on the dock or in the boat with him catching bluegills. He even turned the handle on the reel a few times while I was bringing in fish. He liked throwing the small perch that were about the size he could hold back into the water.

When we would walk up from the pier, he would dutifully put his rod next to the ones I had set out for our friends behind the cabin. When we would go outside, he would walk right over and grab "his" rod and walk down to the pier. A couple times he handed me his lifejacket and said "bo" while pointing at the boat. He made me into an even prouder father (than normal) and gave me the impression that he's going to be looking forward to fishing with me, (and his grandfather). And to be 100% honest, that's more important than any fish I would ever catch.

Here's a few pictures including one of the smaller musky's we caught.

St Germain Report #1

On a little family outing this week in St Germain. We're staying on Lost Lake in a cabin with some friends.

The fishing has been slow. Got a little action Saturday Afternoon from a Mid 40's Muskie. I had it up to the boat twice, but couldn't convert. Caught a few northern pike on spinner baits, but haven't found any walleye or bass that will bite as of yet.

The panfish and perch are biting though, and we're catching some keepers. Perch fry this week for sure.

Will post a complete report when I get back on the 13th.

Cheers

Fall Trips

I will have some limited availablity for the next few weeks.

I'll be in the Eagle River/St Germain area on a short trip starting Friday but I'll be back for the weekend of the 12th.

If you're interested in getting out, please contact me asap to confirm your date.
--------------
Bass and Walleye fishing is set to get super good as they start moving to fall transitional areas. I would imagine the cold front that is headed our way is likely to trigger some fish.

Musky fishing should be in full swing by the 20th. Just in time for the Ironman Tournament on Okauchee. Could this be the year for Okauchee to break the 50inch mark in a tournament?

See you on the water!

Last Week of Summer

You wouldn't know it by the heat today, but Labor Day has passed, and summer is at an end. I like to think of the next two months as early fall.

Guided Sunday during the afternoon, both the bite and the boat traffic were tough. I got a chance to meet Eagle's warden, when he checked me. I did enjoy the conversation and I do like to know the warden's by name/face.

Tough bite ended good, with this nice smallie for Trent.

Finesse approaches seem to be working right now.

Oconomowoc and Silver Trips

On Oconomowoc with new clients on Sunday Morning.

Fishing was tough, but the lake is starting to clear up a little. There's lots of new weed growth this season, especiallyin the the 6-12 foot depths. It might be a fantastic musky season this fall.

On Silver on Monday Afternoon with new clients.

Fairly typical trip for Silver. Better than 30 fish in about 4.5 hours of fishing.

Two things of note: 1.) Jigworms are outproducing wacky worms on Silver this season. 2.) Zac, one of today's clients, caught the first smallmouth I've seen come out of Silver. I have heard rumors of smallmouth in the lake, and it would appear to be a great lake for them to be in, but I was skeptical of the claims for a long time. I have guided for or personally caught literally thousands of bass from Silver over the past few seasons, but never once had even stumbled onto a smallmouth until today. As a result, I'll be taking a better look at some of the deeper structure on the lake for next season.

------

Our Canada trip keeps getting the details changed, but I've been talking extensively with the outpost operator and I think we picked a great lake, even if we have to change the dates of the trip. I'm waiting for confirmation that we have the slot. As soon as I know for sure, I'll be posting additional information.

Musky Mikes Fly-in Canada Trip

After some requests by guide clients and store customers, I have begun to put together a Canadian Fly-In Fishing Trip for August of 2009.

I will lead a small group on a week long trip out of Red Lake, Ontario. We will fish a lake for Northern Pike and Walleye for a week starting on August 7th, 2009. I'll be arranging the food, beer, bait and tackle for the trip and each angler will get a personalized St Croix Jigging Rod as part of the package.

This is a great trip. I've been out with the outfitter several times and we've caught lots of fish at each of the lakes we've gone to. We'll be the only group on the lake (there's no other cabins). The scenery and wildlife are magnificent.

I'll be posting more information soon, but if you are interested, email me.

Weekend Report

Managed to get out both days this weekend.

Went to Lake Koshkonong with Ray on Saturday for a few hours. We trolled the flats and caught around 30 white bass and one short walleye. We tried pulling minnowbaits, and caught a few, but bottom bouncer/spinner harnesses were producing, so we dropped to four rods pulling those. Kytock Rigs (my special twist on the bottom bouncer) produced almost all the fish. The wind had picked up since I had been out there on Thursday, and the fish had repositioned deeper.

Had repeat clients Stu and Michelle on Sunday Morning. We had a nice casual trip to Silver Lake for Largemouth Bass. Caught some fish on Wacky Worms but Jigworms were producing a few more fish today. The fish were deeper than they usually are on Silver, but we got on them right away and ended our half day run with better than 30 fish.

I have a few days available if you'd like to get out.

Koshkonong!

Folks,

If you're looking for a place to get out this weekend, consider packing the boat for Lake Koshkonong where there's an incredible bite happening right now.

Anglers can catch a variety of fish trolling the areas off mainlake points in 4-6 feet of water. While out on Thursday I caught catfish, numerous whitebass, some quality walleyes and even some northern pike.

If you're going to keep some whitebass for eating, remember to take a cooler full of ice to put them one right away after they are caught, and consider catch and releasing any big walleyes you catch. I put a couple back Thursday that were better than 25 inches each.

Good Luck,

What's working?

I got a call from a longtime client last night. He asked me what's been working. I won't pretend to have all the answers, but here's a quick rundown.

Largemouth Bass: Skinny water has been productive for me lately. I've been catching fish on wacky worms, a jigworm and jig and crawler.

I'm fishing the matted grass with a zoom frog or a big floating lizard. I'm targeting the edges of shallow grass piles with a jig and trailer.

I'm starting to catch a few fish around transitional rock areas with a small crankbait in perch and crawfish patterns.

I'm not on a good deep bite, but I'm catching a few on a carolina rig off the flats and a handful off the deep weedlines using a texas rigged salty sinker.

Smallmouth: Tubes, skirted grubs and wacky in that order. The deep edges of rock structure seems to be holding fish.

Northern Pike: Spinnerbaits burned around shallow weeds or slow rolled along weedlines.

Musky: I haven't been fishing for them lately, but the word is topwater early in the morning. I'm sure a few are being caught trolling as well.

Cheers

102 In Two Days!

Back on the water this week and the action has been fast and furious.

Friday: Silver Lake with "Uncle Louie." I wanted to redeem myself after my "slower" day with Uncle Louie earlier this year. We did it. Caught more than 70 bass in just over 6 hours of fishing. We saw two real big fish, and a couple walleyes to boot.

Saturday: Golden Lake with a new client. Started extra early with topwater. As soon as dawn hit, started working shallow water and started catching fish. Caught several bass in the 2.5-3.5lb range. The shallow bite tapered off aroun 8am, so we moved out deeper and caught another batch and finished the day with a bonus northern pike.

Signs indicate that the crayfish molt is just around the corner. Get ready for some incredible summertime shallow water fishing for bass.

Light Posting For Awhile

Greetings,

I know this blog hasn't been very exciting this year, but as some of you may know, I'm currently studying for my dissertation prelim examinations right now.

Its quite an extensive process and has been using up most, if not more than most of my available free time. This coupled with the current lake conditions has put a damper on the amount of fishing I've been doing this season.

I'll be out this weekend for a little fun fishing with Ray, and then in the shop Sunday afternoon if you want to drop by and say hello.

I plan to be on the water heavily after July 15th. Then I'll be starting my new job as an instructor at UW-Whitewater in September.

Ironclad Lures-Product Review

Was out Friday, and I had a chance to put some of the Ironclad stick baits (www.ironcladlures.com) in the water for a test run.

Despite being made to last, they do have some end to end action in the water. They are heavier than comparable stickbaits, and cast a mile. They skip reasonably well, and have a slow sink rate.

I would have liked to see them sink a little faster, and was suprised that they didn't. I added a nail weight to one end, but that wasn't quite the answer I was looking for.

Wacky rigged there was no problem with the bait interfering with the hookset, but I did miss a few bites when i used the rigging holes at either end for texas rigging. I can't say that it wasn't my fault, but the worm was still hooked when I brought my line up. I didn't try them on a carolina rig, but I think they would excel there given their bouancy.

Ironclads work great around cover that would normally pull off a soft stickbait, and I made more than 100 casts without a problem, including several around boatlifts, piers and grass and lillypads. They do last.

I'd give them an 8.5 out of 10.

Mid week "action"

Guided for a father and son combo on Okauchee yesterday. The weather was windy and downright horrible, and the corresponding bite was tough. Got one pike and a handful of largemouth bass, before we packed it in.

Hit Oconomowoc just for a look see. Caught one nice smallie on a long line live bait split shot. Appears the bass are still deep for the most part, but there's a batch of walleyes using some of the shallow rocky areas.

Moved over to Silver for the first time this year, water is high and cold (mid 50's). Lots of bass cruising the shallows including some larger than average ones. The wind prevented me from wacky worming or throwing a jig and chunk, but I managed 25 LM bass between 10-16" in about two hours on a smoke colored grubs. The water is extremely clear, even by Silver Lake standards. Most of the piers and lifts are not in, and the fish I caught were all along the drops to deeper water.

I'll be out tommorrow, and I'll post some pictures from the last couple days.

Lakemaster Maps

While I don't have the formal sponsorships that many pro-anglers have, I don't mind telling you when I find a product that I like is available.

The Lakemaster maps are fantastic. I just got copies of the new maps for Okauchee, Lac Labelle and Nagawicka. I helped write the lake reviews for these lakes, and they show alot of structure that some of the other maps have left off.

There's a link to their website in the right hand column.

Tuesday Night League

It would appear, based on the number of males, and low numbers of female bass brought in last night, that the fish have not moved up to spawn yet.

Lots of males are cruising the shallows, but very few have even started to make nests. The larger females have not moved in just yet, although a few are starting to appear around cover near the traditional spawning areas.

This next batch of cool weather will likely set them back a bit, but as soon as the weather stabilizes and we get a couple of days of consistent weather, expect the fishing to get real good.

See you on the water,

Happy Birthday To Me

Today was my 34th birthday. I actually got to go fishing.

I spent a good chunk of the day getting my gear in order for this weekend and next week, but I took the boat out for a couple hours this afternoon.

Still learning to use my side finder, but I got some great screen shots I'll be posting this weekend.

Fishing was slow but steady. The bigger panfish were hard to come by, I caught about 10 keeping size bluegills out of about 70 total fish.

Water on Okauchee has dropped back into the low fifty's in the shallow bays and high 40's on the main lake. Warmest water was in Whitigers Bay at 56, with Tierney close behind at 54.7. Garvin was 52.

There's lots of bass shallow, but they are running a pre-spawn pattern.

Why Hire a Guide?

Gang,

I was talking with some people I just met this weekend. They were your average Wisconsin/Minnesota outdoorsy type people. Not hardcore fishing and hunting enthusiasts, but the kind of people engage in outdoors activity several times a year.

After the usual discussion about whether Green Bay Packer Aaron Rodgers is going to be worth a damn, the conversation drifted towards the fishing opener this weekend. I mentioned that I was a guide and looking forward to gamefish season.

One of the guys I was with asked why people would hire a guide when they could just go fishing by themselves. I thought about it for a minute, and realized there's no single reason people hire me to take them fishing.

Some don't have the equipment or the knowledge to fish our heavily pressured local lakes. For others its a chance to spend some quality time with a loved one (father+son/ husband+wife/ grandpa and grandson etc.) Some people want to learn a lake or a new technique for fishing. Some just want to catch fish when they go out. Some are in town from somewhere else and its easier to hire a guide than rent an equipped fishing boat.

I certainly subscribe to the last one. When I travel to distant fishing locations the cost and hassle of towing a boat can exceed that of a guide. When I went to texas, i tried to rent a bass boat, but it was actually cheaper to hire a guide. When I contacted him, I told him I more or less wanted to to use his boat, and he was perfectly happy with that. In fact I ended up working from the front of the boat while he relaxed and fished from the back, something as a guide you don't often have the chance to do.

All these things aside, I think they best single reason to hire a guide is so that at the end of the day, you don't have to be this guy:

Walleyes.....

Not on the Rock River, but on the Oconomowoc River.

Yesterday while out crappie fishing, I was totally inspired by the numbers and qualities of walleyes, bass, northerns and muskies I saw in the river and on Oconomowoc.

I haven't done so for a few years, but I'll be guiding on Oconomowoc for walleyes this year. It looks like the stocking efforts have really paid off big, and the fish are approaching quality size. We saw several over 20inches yesterday.

The Musky population looks healthy and vibrant as well. Lots of quality fish, with plenty of undersize fish that are nice and thick.

Oconomowoc is a challenging lake to fish, and it can beat you at times, but I guarantee its going to get some extra attention from me this year.

"Major Flooding" Near Newville

If you're considering heading down to the Rock River in the Jefferson/Ft Atkinson area for Walleys and/or white bass, please be aware of the conditions there.

The water is extremely high from the Jefferson Dam on down to the lake. Many of the traditional shorefishing areas are flooded. Blackhawk Island is flooded and water is moving inland making road access difficult, if not impossible. The Flood Warnings at Newville have been upgraded to "major flooding" the highest category.

This batch of heavy rain over the next 24-48 hours is only going to make the situation worse for the locals.

The entire river is slow no wake until further notice. Be careful, there's lots of debris in the water and the current is very strong. If you are fishing and anchor, keep a sharp knife handy in case you have to quickly cut your ropes.

Here's the current report from 9:29pm on 4-17-2008:

Crappies

Was out yesterday on Okauchee for a bit. The Crappies are biting pretty good.

Posted a fishing report on the baitshop blog and on Lake-link, and got a couple questions about the setup I was using.

Nothing fancy about this kind of fishing. Clip-on (spring) pencil style bobber about 24 inches above a gold or red aberdeen hook with two small splitshots crimped on a little below half way between the hook and the bobber. I was tailhooking the fatheads I had.

I used some "large" fatheads rather than "crappie minnows" because I want to win the G-Loomis Ultralight. They bit both size minnows.
